Living Magazine - September issues of Pearland and Katy edition Story by Joan Mora. There is so much confusing information in the media about how best to care for our skin. Often when faced with conflicting information, we do nothing. A better tack would be to visit one of the doctors at Advanced Dermatology. In the Katy office, Drs. Kelly Duncan and Sherry Ingraham enjoy caring for the entire family, from infants and toddlers to teens and adults. “Healthy habits start at home,” Dr. Duncan said. “The best thing a parent can do is to lead by example. Taking care of your skin, like brushing your teeth, is a healthy behavior that should be performed daily.” Parents should apply sunscreen of an SPF 30 or higher daily to themselves as well as their children. Skin cancer is largely a preventable illness, but education is key. Drs. Duncan and Ingraham advise patients to perform self skin exams monthly and periodically see them in the office for full-body exams. And, Dr. Duncan said, “Reapplication of most sunscreens is imperative on an hourly basis as well as after sweating or water exposure to maintain maximum protection. Exposure to the sun should be minimized during the midday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. whenever possible. Sun protective clothing and hats can be worn to add an additional layer of protection.” As a family-oriented practice, the doctors at Advanced Dermatology see many different ailments. In children, they treat viral skin infections, warts and other common pediatric skin conditions. It’s never too early to see a dermatologist if you’re concerned with your baby’s skin. For teens and adults, Advanced Dermatology offers many treatments for acne and acne-related scars, which can be permanent. “Once the acne is cleared, we like to reverse some of those scars,” Dr. Ingraham said. “Scars respond especially well to Fraxel laser treatments and the use of topical retinoids and sunscreen and, in some cases, we’ll treat early with chemical peels.” Dr. Ingraham is attuned to a teen’s self-image. “After we improve their acne, so many young patients leave smiling. It’s a great feeling, that we can make such an impact.”It is not only their focus on prevention and early-detection, but their caring attitude that makes Drs. Duncan and Ingraham at Advanced Dermatology great choices for your family. MEET DR. DUNCAN MEET DR. INGRAHAM Advanced Dermatology and Skin Care, PA |
